Presenting "Angels Unawares" in two concerts, November 6th, 7:30 p.m. at Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church, 5810 Fort Avenue, Lynchburg and November 7th, 4:00 p.m. at Bedford Presbyterian Church , 105 W Main Street, Bedford . Concerts are free and open to the public.
For many of us, the word, "angel," brings to mind a beautiful, winged creature, very human-like in form, robed in radiant, flowing garments, with a halo of light surrounding its head. In both the Hebrew and Greek translations, the word means "messenger," and is used to describe any agent God sends to do his will. Angels are mentioned at least 108 times in the Old Testament and 165 times in the New Testament. Our concert theme is taken from the Hebrews 13: 2 text: Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.
Our selections will include pieces based on angel passages in the Bible, most notably their appearance to the shepherds when announcing the birth of Jesus, and in Isaiah's vision of the Lord and the Seraphim, crying Holy, Holy, Holy. (Gloria and Sanctus -movements of the order of the Mass with settings by Mozart, Charpentier, and Gjeilo) Others will represent the Annunciation and Christmas themes, including the beloved Angels' Carol by Rutter, and the exquisitely ethereal Bortniansky Cherubic Hymn No. 7. But angels frequently seem to be present with us on earth, and these instances will be represented by several spirituals, and a light-hearted presentation of "So Many Angels!" by Gwyneth Walker.
There will be something to suit every eclectic taste. Please put the dates on your calendars, and plan to attend and enjoy a wonderful evening of beautiful concert literature for women's voices. Tickets are not required, but we appreciate your support in the form of tax deductible donations which may be left in the vestibule or narthex.
